Mother of Invention by zaponator

My first art piece up on Deviantart! Yay! ^_^ And after more than a year of inactivity too. Bout time I got something done! 

This is a piece done for a contest on Equestria Daily, the Friend-off Revival. You have to either draw a scene from a fanfiction or write a story based on an art piece; all My Little Pony-related, of course! I've drawn a scene from a story by zaponator, called "Mother of Invention" (here's a link to his account and story - www.fimfiction.net/story/71501…).

The plot of "Mother of Invention" involves Applejack waking up on a deserted, tropical island with no memory of how she got there or why. She has to figure out how to survive while looking for a way to get back home to her family and friends. And she discovers that a mysterious creature who also inhabits the island wants her dead for some reason, and is constantly hunting for her. Applejack is absolutely terrified of it, specifically because she gets this "wrong" feeling in her gut whenever it's near. I personally enjoyed the story because of it's detailed and engaging writing style; even when Applejack is just relaxing or looking for coconuts, there's still so much going on all around her and it makes for a very interesting read. I also liked how Applejack is put into an unfamiliar environment and forced to deal with an unfamiliar situation, something that rarely happens to her in the show. The story is also intense and at times, very dark, but if you can put up with that stuff, I suggest that you give this fic a try, especially if you're an Applejack fan. 

Anyways, this scene that I've drawn is from the chapter "Hurt", where Applejack, for the first time, is forced to fight against the creature in order to protect her life. She's using a bottle of rubbing alcohol that she found and a piece of blanket soaked in it and lit on fire as a weapon. There's pieces of torn blanket and a stray bottle of alcohol on the ground because she was recently using them to treat a serious injury (as you can see on her foreleg). And before anyone asks, Applejack is crying in the chapter, I didn't put those tears there to make the piece more dramatic. I actually wish I'd made the background a lot darker, since you're supposed to barely see the creature, but I'd already spent so much time on it. Also, when it got scanned, the picture became a little bit lighter, something I might fix in the future (but probably not).
